When I first started researching pet doors, I assumed all doggie doors were basically the same.
I quickly discovered that wasn’t true.
There’s a huge difference between traditional flap-style doors and modern automatic dog door systems.
Here are the five biggest factors I considered.
1. Security
Standard pet doors for dogs remain open all the time.
That means other animals—or even intruders—can potentially enter.
An electronic dog door solves this by opening only when your pet approaches.
2. Weather Protection
Basic doors often fail during cold weather.
A winter dog door or extreme weather dog door includes insulation and seals to prevent drafts.
3. Size and Strength
Large dogs require stronger materials.
A large dog door or extra large dog door must be durable enough to handle frequent use.
4. Installation Options
Different homes require different installation styles. Since I let my dog out to the backyard from my patio, I use a dog door for my sliding glass door. These designs make it possible to install a door without cutting into walls.
5. Smart Features
The newest smart dog door systems connect to apps, allowing owners to control schedules and access remotely.
This technology turns a simple door into a smart home device.
