The story of the Power Pet door began in 1986. As a pet owner, who considered my pets part of the family, I knew the frustration of trying to find pet products that I knew should be out there, but weren’t, or were available but poorly designed. As a mechanical engineer, I decided to do something about it. After several months of research, I began turning my vision into reality, and High Tech Pet Products was started. I got a few of the best engineers in the business to collaborate with and shortly after our company was formed, we introduced the electronic flea collar. After manufacturing millions of these tiny ultrasound emitting collars, it dawned on us that the collar may have other applications besides driving fleas crazy, so we promptly got to work developing several other pet operated devices, using the original flea collar as a transmitter.
The Power Pet door was one of our first ideas, but the original one we built in 1992 bears little resemblance to the mature design you see today. It was large, heavy, loud, and had an annoying tendency to crush anything in its path when closing. Instead of becoming discouraged, our company president, a mechanical engineer who had designed space vehicles for NASA and nuclear reactor cores for Westinghouse, got to work and personally took on the challenge of perfecting the design until a fully automatic, pet operated door that worked, was unveiled.
The early result was very similar in principle, to the product we now produce - a slim, compact dc motor drive that uses a cable to lift a lightweight panel, then return the panel slowly and safely with a brake-assisted gravity feed. Our first production version, the PP series was introduced in 2000.
In early 2006, we introduced the current PX series of Power Pet doors, which uses an engineered ABS plastic composite that is actually stronger and more precise than its metal predecessor. Our VP of Engineering, Bob Schilken, one of the most accomplished analog electronic engineers in the world, contributed the extremely creative directional ultrasonic detection circuitry that performs rings around conventional infared, magnetic and RFID circuits. Bob's ingenious circuitry reliably opens the door only for your pet's collar and only when your pet is on a direct approach, not when just wandering by or sleeping next to the door.
The PX series is phenomenally successful due to its affordability, reliability, installation ease and attractive cosmetic design, in fact earning spots on 3 TV shows, I Want That, Don't Sweat It, and House Detective . It's offered in several models and sizes for installation almost anywhere, to accommodate any size pet.
Since unveiling our fully automatic pet doors, several competitors have attempted, unsuccessfully, to copy our patented design.
